Do Dehumidifiers Reduce Dust Mites?

Do dehumidifiers reduce dust mites?

Can dehumidifiers "starve" dust mites? Deciphering the relationship between humidity and the survival of mites.
Dust mites are one of the culprits of allergic rhinitis and asthma. They are not living pests. What really causes allergies are their corpse fragments and excrement. To fight dust mites, controlling humidity is more effective than spraying pesticides, and dehumidifiers break the survival chain of dust mites by changing the micro-environment.

1. The "comfort zone" code of dust mites
Dust mites belong to the class Arachnida of the phylum Arthropoda, and are best suited to breeding in an environment with a temperature of 25°C and a relative humidity of 70% to 80%. They feed on human dandruff, and each female mite can lay 40 to 80 eggs in its lifetime. Under conditions of sufficient humidity, it only takes 3 weeks from egg to adult. When the humidity is below 50%, dust mites will enter a dormant state due to dehydration. If the dryness continues for more than 11 days, the population will die on a large scale.

2. Double-strike mechanism of dehumidifier
Direct dehydration
Dehumidifier reduces air humidity to below 50%, and the pores of the dust mite's epidermis cannot effectively lock water, and the water in the body is lost at a rate of 5% per hour. Experiments show that at 45% humidity, the egg laying of dust mites decreases by 70%, and the survival rate of young mites is less than 30%.

Cut off the food chain
A humid environment promotes the growth of mold, and mold spores are the secondary nutrient source of dust mites. After dehumidification, mold growth is inhibited, dust mites lose important food supplements, and population expansion is cut off.

3. Scientific Use Guide
Humidity setting: Maintain the range of 45%~50%. Excessive dryness (<30%) may irritate the respiratory tract

Continuous operation: Turn on for at least 8 hours a day, with priority given to bedrooms and fabric sofa areas

Auxiliary measures: Wash bedding with hot water above 55℃ every week, and seal bedding with anti-mite fabrics

Equipment maintenance: Clean the dehumidifier filter regularly to avoid secondary pollution

4. Effect verification
The control experiment of the Japanese Environmental Allergy Research Institute showed that after continuous use of the dehumidifier for 3 months, the density of mattress dust mites decreased by 82%, and the content of allergen Der p1 protein decreased by 76%. However, it should be noted that the existing mite corpses still need to be removed by vacuuming.

Humidity control is equivalent to pressing the "pause button" for dust mites. Although it cannot immediately eliminate the existing population, it can effectively block the reproduction cycle. In conjunction with physical cleaning, dehumidifiers are the key line of defense for building a low-sensitivity home environment.
